What does a hospital need to do to meet meaningful use guidelines?
The concept of meaningful use rested on the five pillars of health outcomes policy priorities, namely:
Improving quality, safety, efficiency, and reducing health disparities
Use computerized CPOE for at least one medication order for more than 30% of patients with at least one medication in their medication list. Enable functionality in EHR for automated drug-drug and drug-allergy checks. E-prescription, maintaining an active medication list, maintaining active drug allergy list, recording demographic data, etc help to improve quality of health system
Engage patients and families in their health
Providing a copy of the electronic record of health information within 3 business days. Provide patients with clinical summaries for more than 50% of all office visits within 3 business days
Improve care coordination
Ensure adequate privacy and security protections for personal health information
Ensure the protection of electronic health information created or maintained by the certified EHR technology through the implementation of appropriate technical capabilities; by conducting or reviewing a security risk analysis, implementing security updates as necessary, and correcting identified deficiencies
