Now that you have decided to refer Mr Hartup to a dentist, you need to use a motivational approach to help him to understand and agree to the visit.
Record a short video or audio file (max 20 seconds) where you demonstrate the difference between a motivational approach and a coercive approach.
A motivational approach is always helpful to make Mr. Hartup understand the importance of a visit to the dentist, and agree to visit. To achieve this aim, the patient can be motivated and inspired by giving examples. Motivation can change the way people think about themselves and others leading them to do positive actions. It is important to build a good relationship with Mr. Hartup to motivate him. Patients are likely to follow the care provider’s advice if they respect and trust their provider. The patient should be given the autonomy to decide as people are more motivated when they feel they are their own decision-makers. He should be provided a clear direction about how to reach his aim without considering any distractions. The patient should be encouraged to be optimistic and do as he is being told because without optimism there is no achievement. In a coercive approach, the autonomy of decision-making is not given to the patient; rather a decision taken by the physician is just imposed on the patient. A coercive approach is not at all encouraging and positive outcomes can’t be expected from such an approach.
In a motivational approach, the care provider can say, "I would suggest that you visit a dentist to get rid of your cavities, which is in your best interest and whatever excuse you have should not come in the way. As you know, cavities could lead to other complications and I don't want you to suffer that much. Since you have been my patient for the past so many years and you know that my suggestions are always good, I think you would opt for a referral to the dentist. However, the final decision is yours and not mine."
In a coercive approach, the care provider can say, "I have made a referral to our dentist for your dental issues. You must pay a visit next Monday at 6 PM. If you have any doubts about this you can make a call later today."
