Describe the good and bad effects of high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) on our health. How do “Statins” help reduce LDL in blood?
Lipoproteins are made up of fat and proteins . Cholesterol moves through our body while inside lipoproteins.there are two types of cholesterol
- High density lipoprotein
- Low density lipoprotein
* High density lipoproteins are "good cholesterol" .It absorbs cholesterol and carries it back to the liver.the liver then flushes it from the body.so high levels of HDL cholesterol can lower the risk of heart diseases and stroke.
Low levels of HDL increases the risk of heart diseases.
*Low density lipoproteins are called as "Bad cholesterol" because it takes cholesterol to the arteries where it may collect in artery walls.
Too much cholesterol in arteries may lead to build up of plaque known as atherosclerosis. This increases risk of blood clots and this clots break away block and artery of heart and brain lead to stroke and heart attack.
Statins: Statins, also known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, are a class of lipid-lowering medications.
Statins reduce blood cholesterol and prevent atherosclerosis, or heart disease. They work by reducing the liver’s production of cholesterol. They block an enzyme called HMG CoA Reductase that the liver uses to make cholesterol.
