On the day his daughter is born, Jack leaves her on Earth and
departs on a spaceship to travel around the universe at a constant
speed of 0.91c. He returns to Earth on the day of his daughter's
7th birthday. Calculate the duration of the trip as measured by
Jack.
(Give your answer in years but don't include the
units.)
The time dilation relation is
t =
t0
Where
is the relativistic constant.
t0 is the proper time measured when the frame of reference is at
rest with respect to the spaceship.
t is the time measured from the earth.
t = 7 yrs
The relativistic constant,
= 1 / sqrt (1 - (v/c)2) = 1 / sqrt ( 1 - (0.91 c/ c)2)
= 5.82
t0 =
t /
t0 = 7 yrs / 5.82 = 1.203 years.
The duration of the trip is 1.203 years.
