Expert Solution

Computer based data collection and paper based data collection are two different methods of conducting survey and collecting data.

Paper based data collection is a traditional method in which a person fills in paper form.

Computer based data collection is newer method, where the enumerator uses a tablet, laptop or computer for data collection.

Computer based data collection technology is improving day by day but paper based data collection may be useful in some situations.

The cost of paper and printing are all on rise. The costs saving alone by switching to online data collection are a significant motivation to make a change. For some organisations the decision is difficult one.

Some target population may not be strictly receptive to online data collection, making the transition difficult decision.

Key Points:-----

# PRESENTATION

Readability is important in any survey. A paper survey in black ink offers a better resolution than you’ll find on any computer monitor making it easier for the respondent to read. If your target population has visual impairment and cannot view text on a monitor, this is a plausible concern, and you will want to strongly consider keeping a paper survey option.

Survey design is another factor to consider. When it comes to paper surveys, there are limitations on space. If you are considering several open-ended questions, providing an ample amount of space for the respondent to complete their answer is crucial.

#SPEED

Paper Surveys are notorious for taking a good amount of time to execute. Whether administration is in-person, mailed, or sent as an email attachment, speed is always going to be a factor.

Online Surveys, however, can collect data in very little time. With many online survey software solutions, creating online surveys is simple and can be administered to your population via email or social media networks within minutes. Because of this rapid distribution, your sample population can respond almost immediately, and data is collected automatically.

# DATA COLLECTION TRAINING

Paper based data collection:- Complex or numerous skip patterns can be difficult for enumerators to master, and it may take much practice for enumerators to reliably enter valid responses into all fields. Therefore, the necessary training period could be lengthy.

Computer based data collection:- Since skip patterns and field validation are handled by the data-collection device, enumerators can be trained more quickly. However, those not used to using smartphone or tablet technology may need extra time to become comfortable using the devices.

# TRANSPORTION AND STORAGE

Paper based data collection:- A secure system must be designed to bring the surveys from the field to the office, and to store the surveys in the office. Once data is entered into the computer, it should be stored securely .

Computer based data collection:- Data collection are typically “transported” via USB connection, local wi-fi network, or the Internet, then “stored” on a server or local hard drive.

# TIME TO DATA

Paper based data collection:- Data typically becomes available only after all of it has been entered and cleaned. This can be weeks or months after the actual data collection.

Computer based data collection:- In the typical set-up where field teams securely upload data to a server on a nightly basis, data is available by day two of data collection.

Reporting of Data is easy in computer based data collection because it is accurately processed and easy to present.

Computer based data collection is more reliable and convenient because possibilities of errors are very low and it is more fast and secure way then compared to paper based data collection.
