Discuss the formation of shadows from broad and point light sources. (this could be an eclipse).
TY!
Shadow is formed when any opaque object comes in path of light or obstructs the path of light so light passes from edges of object forming a shadow on screen.
Shadow consist of two parts umbra and penumbra, umbra is the inner dark portion which blocks maximum light and penumbra is outer part which allows some light to pass.
Now talking about sources of light there are two types of light sources
Point light source
Broad or extended light source
Point sources are considered as source of light coming from a single point in space example light passing through pinhole.
Extended source of light on other hand consist of multiple point sources combined together like light from bulb, sun etc
SHADOW FORMATION
By point source
Shadow formation By extended sources
(a) When extended source is Smaller than opaque object
(b) Source of light bigger than opaque object as in case of eclipses where Source of light(sun) is larger than opaque object(Earth and Moon)
