Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer :

USES OF SODIUM CITRATE :

SODIUM CITRATE : It is the sodium salt of citric acid.A white crystalline powder soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol. It also has anticoagulation property.

1.In MEDICAL point of view :

  • It is used in alkalinizing agent.Works by neutralising excess acid in blood and urine.
  • Used in treatmemt of metabolic acidosis.
  • Used in various respiratory conditions - helps in thinning and removing mucus from airways.
  • Prevention of gout.

2.IN MEDICAL LABORATORIES :

  • It is used as tube additive in blood sample collection.
  • Sodium citrate is an anticoagulant which stabilise blood and blood products by sequestering calcium ions in vitro.
  • Used as an anticoagulant, which results in dilution of blood and should correct the ESR going to higher haemocrit values.

3.IN BLOOD BANK :

  • Extends storage of RBC in blood bags.
  • Decreases the viscosity of packed red cells for easy transfusion.
  • Maximum amount of fresh plasma is harvested - platelets and cryiprecipitates.
  • In massive blood transfusion - hypocalcemia may occur due to chelating action of sodium citrate on calcium. So in massive transfisions iv calcium gluconate is advised.

4.IN PHARMACEUTICAL companies it is used to control PH.
