A book page contains on average 50 lines and each line contains on average 60 characters. The probability that there is character typo is 0.0001. A line or a page contains a random amount of character typos and we want to use the laws or probability to study them. We designate by X, the random variable related to the number of character typos in a line and Y is the random variable related to the number of character typos in a page.

1) Determine the laws of probability of the random variables X and Y

2) Calculate the probabilities of finding in 1 line- 0 typos, 1 typos, 2 typos, at least 1 typo

3) Calculate the probabilities of finding in 1 page- 0 typos, 1 typos, 2 typos, at least 1 typo

4) Calculate the probabilities of finding 2 typos in a page, and the two typos being on the same line

Expert Solution

1)

When we want to predict the probability of certain events in a fixed interval of time and we know the average occurrence of that event, Poisson distribution follows. The probability mass function of Poisson distribution is,

The random variable X and Y follows the Poisson distribution with parameter lambda (the mean value)

For random variable, X

For random variable, Y

For at least 1 typo,

3)

4)

Using the conditional probability law,

Since character typo in a line or in a page are independent events,

A manufacturing process has two assembly lines, A and B. Suppose that line A produces 60% of the product. and line B produces the rest. We are told that 5% of the products produced by line A are defective in some way, and 8% of the line B products are defective. it may be helpful to construct a tree diagram with first and second-generation branches to answer the following: C) if the end product is defective, what is the probability...

Delta Air Lines reports that the average delay time of all arriving domestic flights in 2018 was 60 minutes. A flight is considered delayed if it arrives more than 15 minutes later than the scheduled arrival time. Average delayed minutes are calculated from delayed flights only. A random sample of 20 Delta flights in 2018 had an average delay of 65 minutes with a standard deviation of 5 minutes. a) Categorical or Quantitative Variable? b) Is 60 minutes a Sample...

Gigabody, Inc., a nutritional supplement manufacturer, produces five lines of protein supplements. Each product line is managed separately by a senior-level product engineer who is evaluated, in part, based on his or her ability to keep costs low. The five product lines are produced in a joint production process. After splitting off from the joint production process, all five lines are processed further before resale. Traditionally, joint product costs have been allocated to the five product lines using the physical...
