The following statements concern a fixed mass of an ideal gas being put through a thermodynamic process. Which statement is true?

A. An isobaric, isothermal process is the same as an isovolumetric, adiabatic process.

B. During any isothermal process, no transfer of heat takes place.

C. The internal energy of the gas is unchanged by any adiabatic process.

D. In an isovolumetric process, if a gas absorbs heat its pressure decreases.

E. During isothermal compression, the gas absorbs heat from the surroundings.

F. During isothermal compression the temperature of the gas rises.

Solutions

Expert Solution

(A)In an Isobaric process Pressure P reamains constant while in am isothermal process Temperature T remains constant so in this way an Isobaric-isothermal process is that in which P and T both remains constant.

by ideal gas equation-

PV=nRT

=> V=nRT/P

If P and T remains constant then from above equation V also remains constant.So in an Isobaric-Isothermal process P,V,T all are constant.

Now in isovolumetric process V remains constant while in adiabatic process-

(K=constant)

If V is constant then P must be constant.

So we can say that in an Isovolumetric-Adiabatic process P amd V remains constant and if P& V remains constant then T must remains constant.

Conclusion- We see that in isobaric-isothermal process P,V,T all remains constant.

Also in Isoolumetric-Adiabatic process P,V,T remains constant.

These two processes are same.So this statement is true.

---------------------------------------------------------

(B) False, because during an isothermal process heat transfer takes place.

(C)False, Because in adiabatic process temperature of gas changes so internal energy also changes.

(D) False, When gas absorbs heat in an isovolumetric process then its pressure increases.

(E)False, Because during isothermal compression heat flows from gasto surrounding.

(F)False, Because inan Isothermal process temperature of gas always remains constant.
