B. Which member of the following pairs has the lesser predicted amount of entropy?

H2O (l) or H2O (s)

PbS (s) or PbF2(s)

Fe(s) at 25°C or Fe(s) at 100°C

Solutions

Expert Solution

Entropy as a measure of molecular disorder within a macroscopic system.

In solids the atoms/molecules / ions are in close packing so the disorder will be less.

In case of liquids the packing is somewhat low compared to solids so the disorder will be more.

In case of gases the disorder will be more than that of liquids.

Therefore the order of disorder is : gas > liquid > solid

So the entropy order is : gas > liquid > solid

(1) H2O (l) or H2O (s)

In this case water exists in solid & liquid state. The disorder will be less in H2O (s) so the entropy will be less

(2) PbS (s) or PbF2(s)

The number of atoms surrounding Pb is more in PgF2 than PbS.

As the surrounding atoms will be more the atoms has freedow to move around the central atom.

Therefore the disorder will be less in PbS which leads to lesser entropy.

(3)Fe(s) at 25°C or Fe(s) at 100°C

As the temperature increases the molecules absorb energy & has a change to move freely , so entropy increases there by Fe(s) at 25°C having lower entropy.
