A culture is the base of a society. It is explained as a learned belief system, attitude, norms and values, practices etc shared by a group of people( Smith, 1966). Following a culture is important to the inhabitants as it binds everyone together. Meanwhile, blindly practising the culture may also result in some drawbacks.
The Hispanics, Native Americans and Asian Americans serve a tight bond among the family members. Elders are valued and the responsibility of decisions is taken over to them. Thus the elder in the family makes decisions for all the members of the family. The few cultural behaviours followed by the groups are mentioned below
Considering illness as Gods will - In Hispanics, elder and the older family member are treated with high respect and dignity. if any illness occurs, the older members of the subgroup of the Hispanic population is consulted. The illness is considered as gods will or punishment for the sinful deed committed by the person also prefers home remedies to treat the illness. They consider visiting hospital only if the condition worse.
Treating illness using a "shaman"- Some native Americans give great value for spiritual healing and heavenly symbols. They believe in nature and follows the cultural practice of natural medicines and heavenly signs which gives health to the people. As a result, If any illness occurs they summons a "shaman" who believes to have the power to influence good and evil spirits for healing.
Not accepting mental illness- the Asian Americans, especially from the certain suburban part of India and Pakistan, people feel reluctant to acknowledge any emotional disturbances or trauma within the family members. Treatable emotional disturbance and illness are considered as the severe mental disorder thus the chance of marriage of all family members goes minimal.
Joint families - In the certain part of China, in order to preserve the harmony and to avoid disagreement in the family, the one elder takes the authority of the family. He takes decision for all the members in the family and it abide without any disagreement. As a result, any suppressed disagreement or discontent by the other family member result in a lack of self-esteem, feeling of shame and guilt. This adversly effects the heath and results in other psycho- somatic illness.
Health education is the key element to remove the practised cultural prejudice. Health education supported by examples and case studies helps the group to change the belief pattern. Targeting the young individuals in schools and colleges helps to educate about the changing pattern in culture.
Usage of mass media- Radio and television play a safe and effective way of providing education to the population. As per the record of CDC, Hispanics have a special interest in TV and radio which can be used as a major channel to reach up to them.
Using native language - Using the native language to communicate with Latino/ Hispanics, helps to relay the message easily and effectively. Communicating with Spanish means a cultural respect and is likely to listen more.
Using bilingual ads- For communication, using Spanish- English media by an English - Speaking celebrity appeals the young teens. This influence the teen to listen and more likely practice as well as understand what the message relays.
Community activities - Coordinate community activities with the help of established people and organisation. "Promotoras" is the trusted community health advisors in United States who visit homes and family.
