What can consumers do to prevent becoming a victim of medical identity theft?
1. Collect copies of your medical records and update new information every time you receive treatment.
2. Check your medical records at least once every year. If you find an error, notify your healthcare provider and request an alteration.
3. Be careful with your Social Security number (SSN) . Make sure you don't provide it to unknown sources.
4. Understand every explanation of benefits (EOB) information from your insurer. If you identify something doubtful, call and fix the errors immediately.
5. If your hospital asks you to scan your driving license or other government-issued ID, ask them whether it’s necessary and resist. If those information is stolen along with your medical information, it can double the chance of identity theft.
6. Never share your health or personal information on phone or via email unless you’re sure who you are contacting with.
