The question:
A teacher is trying to figure out how fast he can throw a Baseball, but doesn't have a radar gun. He does have the following:
- Baseball
- Soft styrofoam Block ( In which the ball could become embedded into during a collision)
- A level tabletop
- A metre stick
- A balance scale.
The teacher also has determined the coefficient of friction between the block and table.
NOTE: The kinetic coefficient of friction is determined while sliding.
The task:
Answer the following below questions:
1. Draw a diagram based on the above question.
2. With the aide of diagrams, derive a single equation that the teacher could use to determine the speed of the ball immediately prior to colliding with the block. Show your steps
3. State and explain 3 to 4 assumptions that need to be made such that your equation above is valid.
