The article link below is titled “Effectiveness of External Cold and Vibration for Procedural Pain Relief During Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation in Pediatric Patients” contains reports of several independent samples t-tests.

Please note whether you believe the independent samples t-tests were used appropriately. Were assumptions met? What were the strengths and weaknesses of the article? Do you believe the limitations listed were accurate?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The independent t-tests were used appropriately to determine the significant differences between the two groups. There is no significant difference between the groups based on the age, sex, BMI, Preprocedural anxiety according to the parents and observer's report. the statistical t value is significant and p =0.0000 which is less than the set alpha value of 0.05. When the pain and anxiety level compared with independent t-test sample, the children with external cold and vibration show less pain and anxiety.

The strength of the study is the same nurse has done the iv cannulation for all the children and anxiety level is measured by Wong Backer facers scale(WBFC) and visual analog scale(VAC). The weakness of the study is that the children have no previous experience of IV cannulation.

The level of significance was set at 0.05. There is no significant difference between the buzzy intervention group and the control group. p values are never zero in this study. There is no difference in the observer's reported anxiety level for both intervention group and control group. The null hypothesis was rejected. These are all shows that the limitations were accurate.

A researcher wants to evaluate the pain relief effectiveness of a new medication for chronic pain sufferers. Using a pain scale from 0 to 10 (where 0 = no pain at all, and 10 = the most pain you can imagine), she compares the pain level for a sample of n1 = 4 people who received the new medication, with the pain level for a sample of n2 = 4 people who received a placebo.
