I need to write a final paper for my managed care course. I chose to do mine on diabetes and managed care as I am a type 1 diabetic. However, I need some ideas for this paper on what to write regarding diabetes and the relation to managed care.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a nearly absolute deficiency of insulin( primary beta cell destruction); if insulin is not given, fats are metabolized for energy, resulting in ketonemia(acidosis)
ASSESSSMENT
Polyuria
polydipsia
polyhagia
hyperglycemia
blurred vision, slow wound healing, vaginal infections, weakness and paresthesias,
signs of inadequate circulation to the feet, signs of accelerated atherosclerosis(renal, cerebral, cardiac, peripheral)
INSULIIN
INSULIN is used to treat type I and 2 diabetes mellitus when diet, weight control therapy
and oral hypoglycemic agents are failed to maintain satisfactory blood glucose levels
COMPLICATIONS OF INSULINE THERAPY
local allergic reactions
insulin lipodystrophy
insuline resistence
dawn phenomenon
somogyi phenomenon
DIET
THE diabetic client's diet should take into account weight, medication, activity level, and other health problems.
Day to day consistency in timing and amount of food intake help control the blood glucose levels
carbohydrate counting my be a simpler approach for some clients ;it focus on the total gram of carbohydrate eaten per meal
incorporate the diet into individual client needs, lifestyle, and cultural and socioeconomic patterns
EXERCISE
EXERCISE lowers the blood glucose level, encourages weight loss, reduces cardiovascular risks, improves circulation and muscle tone, decreases total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and decrease insulin resistance and glucose intolerence.
