1. obtain a slide of a blood-vessel (artery) and a slide of the esophagus: compare the lining. What types of cells are there?

What is the difference?

Why do you think this is?

2. Compare adipocyte tissue with alveoli. How can you distinguish between them?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  1. Blood vessels: The inner Lining of blood vessels is composed of a single cell layer called as the endothelium. The outermost cost is the tunica adventitious followed by tunica media and tunica intima(endothelial layer) which is a single layered squamous epithelium.
  2. Esophagus: The innermost layer is the mucosa. It has many glands and lymph nodes. It is a stratified squamous epithelium.

The difference between these epithelia are associated with their function. Blood vessels have to have a thin lining ( endothelium) because they are responsible for gas and nutrient exchange. Esophaus is a part of the digestive passage and undergoes peristalsis and thus needs a sturdy stratified squamous epithelium.

3. While both these have vacuolated appearance, adipose tissue is lined by a thin epithelium and has ample cytoplasm while alveoli are lined by a simple squamous epithelium and the cells are clearly distinguishable on a slide( appear dark and not uniformly lined like the adipose tissue)

Multiple myeloma, or blood plasma cancer, is characterized by increased blood vessel formulation (angiogenesis) in the bone marrow that is a predictive factor in survival. One treatment approach used for multiple myeloma is stem cell transplantation with the patient's own stem cells. The data show below represents the bone marrow microvessel density for patients who has a complete response to the stem cell transplant (as measured by blood and urine tests). The measurements were taken immediately prior to the stem...
