Core values are guiding principles which affect fundamental behavior pattern of individual or business organization. Core values influence virtues of an individual or an organization. In profession or business, core values serve as ethical or moral standards which are essential component for well being of society, nation, environment.
Below are some core values which are identified as essential component of any individual's profession or business:
1. Excellence: Any service offered or job undertaken should be attended with thorough knowledge in that service or job and end product is of high quality ensuring client satisfaction. This core value ensures value for the money paid by client or customer. Without this core value, people may lose confidence in service provider as well as whole system.
2. Accountability: An individual as professional should be responsible for decisions made and actions carried out during process of providing service. It is considering all benefits and disadvantages, effects on environment, impact on client, impact on society, etc., before acting. This responsibility is essential as irresponsible actions may raise negative consequences in society.
3. Respect: Respecting coworkers, subordinates, other people, clients is essential to have healthy professional rapport as well as maintaining ethical standards in business. Professional must respect client's beliefs, ideas, their time, as well as emotions and sentiments of coworkers. This will create mutual respect and understanding between service provider and client resulting in business success.
4. Confidentiality: Keeping client's or other associated people's information confidential is considered as high moral standard. This is integral part of business ethics without which client confidence cannot be obtained.
5. Consistency: Maintaining consistency in delivery of service is essential value without which business cannot thrive.
6. Social responsibility: Donating some part of profit for social cause is termed as social responsibility. This is must to be practiced core value for any profession or business with high moral standards.
These core values are essential to any profession or business without which overall identity of professional or business house cannot be completed. Example: If there is no confidentiality, then clients may not feel safe to provide all information to the professional. If there is no accountability, then there might not be value for money paid by client for the service. Without excellence in practice, faulty service or product may occur frequently resulting in unsatisfied client. Similarly, let us examine other core values and its rationale:
If consistency in service delivery is absent, then client may not feel same kind of service at all time and suspect the quality of service every time, resulting in hindered business.
If there is no respect to client's view or preferences, then the client may not continue the business with service provider. Similarly, if there is no respect to subordinates or co-workers' emotions and sentiments, then cooperation at the workplace will get hindered affecting effective business delivery.
If social responsibility is absent in business house, then entire outlook of the organization will get distorted and negative consequences may arise.
We can apply these core values in profession or business organization as universal core values. These become essential part of the business or profession ensuring healthy society, satisfied customer, happy workers. The core values can be applied through defining vision and mission statement and adapting it in all works. These values should become integral part of an organization or professional making it inseparable. By stating mission and vision in accordance with above core values, we can apply these values in every walk of life in profession or business.
