What is the difference between an Environmental Assessment (EA) and Environmental Impact Statement?
Environmental Assessment (EA): An environmental assessment is a National Environmental Policy act(NEPA) document that federal agency prepares to determine whether a federal action (such as issuing permit) will significantly affect quality of the environment.
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS): An EIS is more detailed NEPA document that a federal agency prepares when it determines that a federal action will significantly affect the quality of environment.
Now an EIS is much more comprehensive document. An EIS would require while also preparing requiring a much more comprehensive discussion of the reasonable alternatives and a hard look at cumulative impacts of the proposal along with all existing and reasonably foreseeable future development within project area.
