Should corporations be allowed to own human DNA, and profit from it? Why or why not? Support your answer with information from the movie " Cracking the code of life"
Corporations should not be allowed to own or have patent on human DNA, and profit from it. Patents are for inventions, not merely discoveries. Patenting genes would be like owning a new species discovered in some faraway place. Genes simply are not man-made inventions.
Scientists, in any corporation, replicate the gene they wish to study. If they patent a gene, replicating the gene violates the patent. So, it also hinders scientific research.
In the movie " Cracking the code of life", it shows that in July 2000, the global headlines was the much anticipated sequencing of the human genome, as the scientists decoded the genetic makeup of human bodies. This remarkable achievement may have profound implication on the prevention and treatment of disease. Genetic manipulation may indeed eradicate previously incurable disorders.
So, if any corporation own the human DNA, no one would be allowed to improvise it.
