Define the following terms and give one example for each:

(a) Commensalism

(b) Parasitism

(c) Camouflage

(d) Mutualism

(e) Interspecific competition.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) Commensalism is a type of population interaction between two species in which one species is benefitted and other is never harmed nor benefitted. Example: barnacles grow on the back of whale.

b) Parasitism is a type of population interaction between two species in which one species is dependent on another species for food. One species is benefitted and another is harmed. Example: lice on human.

C) Camouflage is the natural defence mechanism develop in prey. Example strips on zebras

D) Mutulism is a type of population interaction between two species in which both species are benefitted from each other. Example : lichen ( algae and fungi)

E) Interspecific competition is type of population interaction in which the feeding efficiency of one species is reduced due to the activity of another species. One species is benefitted and another is harmed. Example : In galapogas island, the abingdon become extinct due greater browsing efficiency of goats.
