Using internet and other resources, research a current
theory of causes of SIDS
To what extent is there a single "cause" of SIDS?
Alternatively, consider the proposition that SIDS is merely a term
of convenience used by pathologists when they are unable to
determine the cause and that the term "unascertained" is a
preferable, and more honest, approach.
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death usually during sleep, of a seemingly healthy baby less than a year old
SIDS is also known as crib death because infants often die in their cribs
Although the cause is unknown ,it appears that SIDS may be associated with abnormalities in the portion of the infants brain that controls breathing and arousal from sleep
Researchers discovered some factors that may put infants at extra risk. They have also identified some measures you can take to help protect your child from SIDS
The important measure is placing the baby on his/her back during sleep
Physical factors associated with SIDS include:
1.Brain abnormalities
2.Low birth weight
3.Respiratory infections
Sleep environmental factors:
1.sleeping on the stomach or side
2.sleeping on a soft surface
3.sleeping with parents
The items in a baby's crib and his sleeping position can combine with a baby's physical problems to increase in the risk of SIDS
Sex,age, race, family history, secondhand smoke, being premature are several factors that increase the risk of SIDS
