How are variable stars useful to astronomers? If no variable stars are easily identified in distant galaxies, what do astronomers use to determine distance?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Variable stars are the one ,whose brightness changes periodically. If we observe how much time is required for a variable star to go from bright to dim , back to bright , we can tel how bright the star is .In variable stars , their brightness is connected to their period.

If we know exactly how bright a variable star , and how bright when it looks from earth, one can determine the distance of the star from the earth.Astronomers also use this technique to determine the distance of a variable star in distant galaxy.

Once the period of the variable stars is known, its brightness can be determined. Its apparent magnitude and absolute magnitude are related by distance modules equation.By this equation, Astronomers can determine the Distance of the star from the earth.

If no variable star is identified in the distant galaxy, Astronomers would use stellar parallax technique to determine the distance .

It is a visual effect.when an observer on the earth moves , the nearby objects appear to be shifted relative to distant objects. Now by measuring the angle through which the stars appears to move over the course of the year and knowing how far the earth has moved , the Astronomers are able to determine the star's distance using basic geometry .

While attempting to view distant stars, many novice, hobby astronomers will either buy or build a telescope to use. Under an entirely hypothetical situation, a novice astronomer purchases a +400mm concave lens and a -100mm eyepiece. a) Where would the -100mm eyepiece need to be located in relation to the +400mm objective lens in order to resolve and image? b) Where would the image being produced by the eyepiece be located and will it be erect or inverted? c) What...

In an attempt to reduce the extraordinarily long travel times for voyaging to distant stars, some people have suggested traveling at close to the speed of light. Suppose you wish to visit the red giant star Betelgeuse, which is 430 ly away, and that you want your 20,000 kg rocket to move so fast that you age only 22 years during the round trip. 1.How fast (v) must the rocket travel relative to earth? 2. How much energy is needed...

Astronomers have recently discovered an unknown distant galaxy and noticed something abnormal. Specifically, they suspect the percentage of stars that host planets in this galaxy is lower than is typical. (It is known that around 75% of stars throughout the universe have planets). Given the current state of technology, astronomers are not able to conduct a complete scan of all the stars in this galaxy. So instead they randomly observed 45 stars within the new galaxy, and found only 24...
