What are the major provisions of the privacy rule in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996?

There are three major provisions of the privacy rule in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.They are as follows

  • Portability
  • Medicaid Integrity Program/Fraud and Abuse
  • Administrative Simplification

Portability provisions in HIPAA rule aims to reduce number of unemployed individuals & self employed not having health insurance,by making them avail the health insurance. It also aims in preventing individuals from losing health care coverage due to a preexisting condition, like changing to a new employer’s health plan.

The Medicaid Integrity Program (MIP) guarantees that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has a funding source for protected health onformation and expands its authority to hire anti-fraud contractors.It also provides support and assistance in fighting against medicaid provider fraud and abuse.

Administrative Simplification Rules are administered and enforced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and include:
