What are the benefits and drawbacks of using preserved ocular lubricants and artificial tears.
Occular lubricants and artificial eye tears are the materials used to keep eyes moistens. It has both benefits and drawbacks.
Benefits include
1. Used to relieve burning, irritation, and discomfort caused by dry eyes.
2. Used to treat dry eye, allergic reactions and redness
3. Some artificial tears promote healing of the eyes.
4. Thickening solution contained in the eye tears helps to keep the solution on the surface of eyes longer time.
5. Artificial tears are used to moisten contact lenses and aslo during eye examination.
6. Artificial tears containing lipids such as castor oil reduce tear evaporation and prevent intrusion of skin lipids
7. Artificial tears used as a first line treatment for dry eyes.
Drawbacks include
1. Mild eye burning, irritation.
2. Eye pain.
3. Vision changes.
4. Itching and redness of the eyes.
5. Watery eyes.
6. Blurred vision.
7. Sometimes there will be less common side effects like increased sensitivity to light, swelling of eye lids, stickiness of eye lashes.
8.Unpleasant taste in the mouth.
