what is in-vitro fertilization? what does the catholic church teach about it?

Solutions

Expert Solution

In vitro fertilization is the process of fertilization where the egg is combined with sperm outside the body in the test tube.

Ova from the women is taken out from the ovaries and is combined with the sperm in the liquid in the laboratory in ideal condition of viability.

Catholic chuch oppose the IVF because they believe:

First, they teaches that human dignity is only maintained when the beautiful love union of two people leads to conceive the child. Which is absent when the embryo is developed in the laboratories via IVF. This is morally unacceptable.

Second, the process of IVF causes disposal of embryos. Catholics believe that embryo are an individual soul which should be treated as such. And IVF is a process which creates so much pain to women and there is very less possibility of its effectiveness.

Catholics believe that infertility should not be seen as evil. The couples who can't conceive baby should show generosity by adopting the abandoned child or by providing services to the other for good cause.
