You have just discovered a new radioactive element! You nd

that it rst undergoes an alpha decay followed by a beta decay.

During the alpha decay Q1 energy is released, and during the beta

decay Q2 energy is released. Find an expression for the mass of

the nal product after these two decays in terms of the released

energies, the mass of the parent nucleus, and the decay products.

For your physical representation you should draw diagrams of the

particles emitted in each decay with vectors representing their

velocities and labels for their kinetic energy. Hint: you should

use conservation of energy to nd the expression.

Imagine that you have discovered a new element in the soil of Mars called Marsantium (Ms). Martian elements have slightly different properties than elements found on Earth – full valence shells have 16 electrons rather than 2 or 8. Ms contains 15 electrons in its valence shell. (Assume that the laws of physics still apply on Mars.) 1. Is Ms likely to be reactive (form bonds with other atoms)? Why or why not? 2. You mix Ms together with another...

You have discovered a new element. You have determined that its atomic mass is 80.1 g/mol , and from x-ray diffraction you know that it has a BCC crystal structure and scattering is observed from the {110} planes at a scattering angle of 45 ∘. The x-ray wavelength is 0.154 nm.  What is this element's density?

A chemist claims to have discovered a new gaseous element, effuvium (Ef), which reacts with atmospheric nitrogen to form effuvium nitride: 2 Ef(g) + 3 N2(g) 2 EfN3(g) In a container initially containing N2 at 1.00 bar and Ef at 0.75 bar, the total pressure at equilibrium, according to the chemists measurement, is 1.2. Compute Keq for this reaction.

You have discovered a new drug that you believe will be a powerful memory stimulant. There is a large demand for this drug among undergraduate students but before you can market it, the FDA wants you to determine the nature of the drugs receptor. In the lab you isolate neurons to determine the receptor as an ion channel; that is specific for a single ion and it has a reversal potential of 97.6 mV. Using the ion concentrations and constants,...

You have discovered a new species of sea squirt and you have named it Seasquirtus laker after your alma mater. Sea squirts feed by sucking water through a tube into the pharynx, and then into the stomach. This water not only contains nutrition, but also potential toxins and microbes from the environment. As an immunologist, you are curious about how S. laker protects itself from environmental threats. What are 3 different mechanisms that S. laker might prevent microbial infection or...
