You have discovered a new drug that you believe will be a powerful memory stimulant. There is a large demand for this drug among undergraduate students but before you can market it, the FDA wants you to determine the nature of the drugs receptor. In the lab you isolate neurons to determine the receptor as an ion channel; that is specific for a single ion and it has a reversal potential of 97.6 mV. Using the ion concentrations and constants, determine what ion is being transmitted by your ion channel. Given: Na+out= 140mM Na+in=10mM   K+out=3mM    K+in=150mM Cl-out=135mM Cl-in 5mM Ca2+out= 1.0mM Ca2+in=0.002mM Temp=25Celsius   R=8.314 J*mol^-1 K^-1   F=96,500 J*volt^-1 mol^-1 Use natural logs (ln) for all calculations. (Please work out in step wise fashion and explain. Thank You.)

Drug addicts have excellent memory for their behaviors that result in drug intake. They become addicted because the drugs become associated with positive reward signals. Hypothesize how the anatomical structures you surveyed today work together as a network to mediate this outcome.

You have discovered a new species of sea squirt and you have named it Seasquirtus laker after your alma mater. Sea squirts feed by sucking water through a tube into the pharynx, and then into the stomach. This water not only contains nutrition, but also potential toxins and microbes from the environment. As an immunologist, you are curious about how S. laker protects itself from environmental threats. What are 3 different mechanisms that S. laker might prevent microbial infection or...

You have discovered a new galaxy and you think you have identified an Type II Cepheid star with a period of 30 days. You measure its brightness and with the Period-Luminosity function you calculate the distance to the galaxy d. However, you later find out that in fact the star you had identified is a Type I Cepheid. Is the galaxy further than, or, close to, us than we previously expected? By what factor should you multiply d to get...

11. You have discovered a new species of vampire bat in South America (which you have named Desmodus knoxensis!), and you wish to answer several questions about its behavior. a) Based on your observations over a few years, you conclude that the mating system in D. knoxensis is lek polygyny. What sorts of observations and behaviors do you record in males and females over the years to reach this conclusion? (6 points) b) In D. knoxensis, males have long, heavy...

You have discovered a new species of vampire bat in South America (which you have named Desmodus knoxensis!), and you wish to answer several questions about its behavior. Given the fact that D. knoxensis females and juveniles roost together in hollow trees like other vampire bats, you hypothesize that vampire bat roosts act as information centers, a hypothesis that requires FOUR pieces of evidence (list them below). Based on your knowledge of a related vampire bat species (D. rotundus), what...

Do you believe there may be a "crime gene" that has yet to be discovered and causes the propensity to become a criminal? Or, do you believe that crime is a result of socialization and environment? Why? "Criminology Course"

You have discovered a new species of platypus with an unprecedented 7 layer cortex, with an additional neuronal layer compared to the typical 6 layers mammalian cortex. Propose an experiment to determine in what sequence the neuron layers were generated during brain development in this platypus. This question has been written based on the following article: " The determination of neuronal fate in the cerebral cortex", Review article by Susan K. McConnell

A researcher studies the effect of the herbal stimulant Buttercup on short-term memory; she randomly divides a sample of 32 into four (4) groups.  Each group receives 0 mg, 500 mg, 1000 mg and 1500 mg respectively and is then tested on their short term memory span.  She finds:                         NUMBER OF ITEMS REMEMBERED (MEMORY SPAN)             0.0 mg             500 mg                        1000 mg                      1500 mg                       8                      7                                  10                                4             9                      6                                  15                                5             7                      9                                  14                                2             7                      8                                  14                                4             8                      8                                  17                                3             10                    6                                  13                                8             6                      12                                9                                  7             7                      9                                  12                                9 A.        State the Independent Variable and the Dependent Variable. You have discovered a new element. You have determined that its atomic mass is 80.1 g/mol , and from x-ray diffraction you know that it has a BCC crystal structure and scattering is observed from the {110} planes at a scattering angle of 45 ∘. The x-ray wavelength is 0.154 nm.  What is this element's density?
