How did the role of the federal government expand during the progressive era?

The federal government expanded with a wide range of changes and
developments. One of the major implementation was the eighteenth
amendment passed in late 1917 which was to ban manufacturing, sale
and transportation of alcohol.
But the nineteenth amendment gave woman the right to vote. The
political ideology was to favor actions that are rational for the
welfare and improvement of the society..The civil rights for the
African Americans were not given much importance. The modernization
was to improvement on education and family welfare
