The NAACP was formed in the aftermath of Reconstruction, the Gilded Age, and the Second Industrial Revolution. Explain the historical forces that led to a joint coalition of Americans to create and join this organization.
NAACP – Origin
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
was formed in 1909 to the justice for African American. The purpose
of the mission was to ensure political, educational, social and
economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial
hatred and racial discrimination. The association was formed after
the gilded age in the United States from 1870s to 1900. The period
was an era of rapid economic growth in the US, especially in the
northern and western parts.
The Race Riot of 1908 shows the importance of an effective
organization for the rights of the black people against lynching
and exploiting them. Although lynching black people and the
problems they faced in the US was severe in periods before and even
after 1900, the important incident than led to the formation of
NAACP was the Race Riot of 1908. That showed the clear need of
structural change in the civil rights of the black people. The
social, political, economical and educational privileges that the
whites enjoyed were only a dream to the black there in US before
that. The organization tried to introduce the rights the black
deserves. They argued for the changes in the political and social;
views towards blacks. Realizing the problems the black suffered,
the Race Riot stood important in the formation of the
organization.
