Describe the general function of each of the following types of steroid hormones:

Estrogens

Androgens

Progestins

Mineralocorticoids

Solutions

Expert Solution

(1) The primary function of estrogens is development of female secondary sexual characteristics. These includes breasts, endometrium, regulation of the menstrual cycle etc. In males estrogen helps in maturation of the sperm and maintenance of a healthy libido.

(2) Androgens are the group of sex hormones that give men their 'male' characteristics. They are crucial for male sexual and reproductive function. They are also responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics in men, including facial and body hair growth, and bone and muscle development.

(3) Progesterone is one of the hormones in our bodies that stimulates and regulates various functions. Progesterone plays a role in maintaining pregnancy. The hormone is produced in the ovaries , the placenta (when a woman gets pregnant) and the adrenal glands.

(4) Mineralocorticoids are a class of corticosteroids, which are a class of steroid hormones. Mineralocorticoids are corticosteroids that influence salt and water balances.
