1. A variable is anything that has a quality or quantity. It is of two types :-

- dependent variable - a variable in which the researcher is interested in, like in the above mentioned clinical question

Example- minimise the post operative pain

- independent variables - which affects the dependent variable

Example on the basis of above mentioned clinical question - pain medication administration during surgery incision.

2. Characteristics of research study are :-

- it must be written by the same individual who has conducted the study.

- it has a definite structure including problem ,methods , design used etc.

- it reports research findings

- it includes a hypothesis , research questions , background study ,methods , results , their interpretation , discussion and conclusions .

- it interprets the findings and discuss the possible implications.

3. Research methods are :-

- qualitative methods -means collection of non -numerical data , includes focus groups , individual depth interview, case studies and observations

- quantitative methods- means collection of numerical data ,include experiments , simulation, mechanical observations, personal interview ,mail etc

Research results are the findings of the study by gathering information as a result of methodology . It must arranged in logical sequence and state the findings simply without bias and interpretation.

Research results discussion - is to interpret and describe the significance of the study findings. Any changes seen after conducting the study ,any new information gathered that needs to be implicated.
