The patient's wife has diabetes and has been using her capillary blood glucose monitor to check the patient's glucose levels. The results were 206mg/dL and 208 mg/dL on separate days. Today the patient's glucose is 212mg/dL. The physician prescribes glimepiride (Amaryl).
1. the patient asks how a pill will lower his blood sugar. How does the nurse respond? What is the rationale for the nurses response?
2. At the patient's next visit, his A1C level is 6%. How will the nurse interpret this finding? What does the A1C measure?
1.The nurse can respond in the following way
2.A1C measures the average blood glucose levels of a patient in the past three months .The level between 5.7-6.4 means patient are in Pre diabetic stage in a healthy individuals .The patient has 6% being diabetic which means the blood glucose are well controlled .(The average blood sugar is 126mg/dL which is near to normal range .
