Describe the components and locations for concrete and earth
fill dams.
Ans:- Dams and reservoirs are generally constructed to store the water and usage of water whenever required especially in the cast of forming. These dams used for fishing and boating purpose and also dams and reservoirs helps to reduce the damage caused due to Floods.
Concrete Dam: It is preferred in most economical locations and the dam is a narrow part of a huge depth of river valley and the valley sides are better to act as a walls of the river flow and for storage of water. The concrete can able to construct where the sand mixed with gravel, clayey gravel, silty sand, etc. But, Ony silt, sand locations of soil should not be a better option. Components are water retaining structures, spillways, Conduits, Power stations, etc.
The forces by the water will be counteracted by the self mass of the dam and it is also called Gravity dam.
Earth Fill Dam: In this case, The dam is generally made up of Soil, and the forces exerted by the water upon the soil is resisted by Shear strength (bonding between the particle to particle) and bearing capacity of the soil. Earth fill dam is constructed on the location of different mixture of soil like sand, gravel, clay, impervious rock, etc. Simply the location should be naturally dense and waterproof material. The main Components are rockfill water and energy( Compacting equipments), etc.
