1)What is corona discharge? 2)Why engineers avoid sharp extensions in high voltage wires? 3)What is a capacitor and capacitance? 4)What is capacitor good for? 5)If a capacitor is charged and then disconnected from the source, what happens to its energy when the plate separation is increased? What happens if the capacitor is still connected to the source?
1) when a highly potentially charged conductor ionizes the fluid or gas surrounding the conductor, a bluish white luminous discharge appears around it,such apperance of the conductor is known as corona discharge.
3) capacitor is an electrical component which stores charge , moreover it is two conducting plates seperated by an insulator. when charged with opposite signs of charge ,an electric field exists between the two plates.
capacitance is the electrical property and also the ability of the capacitor to store electrical charge. it is usually denoted as Farad, the unit of capacitance.
4) capacitor is useful in many ways such as
i) when there is a sudden rise in power supplied to the device . it protects the device from damaging by temporarily absorbing excess power flow, which goes into the capacitor.
ii) it is used in radios which has the role of reducing the interference during communication.
iii) it is basic component which is used in every electrical device such TV, telephones, smartphones, ceiling fans , inverters etc.
