Consider what you know about Mendelian Genetics. How does this play a role in people affected by sickle cell anemia who live in regions where malaria is present?

Solutions

Expert Solution

An Austrian monk named Gregor Mendel introduce a new theory of inheritance based on his experimental work with pea plants.Mendel believed that heredity is the result of discrete unit of inheritance , and every single unit or gene was independent in its action in an individual genome. According to this Mendelian concept , inheritance of traits depends on the passing on of these units. There three principle of Mendelian inheritance.

1.The law of dominance.

2.Law of segregation.

3.Law of Independent assortment.

- The mode of mendeMend inheritance are autosomal dominant ,autosomal recessive , X- linked dominant , X- linked recessive. It is also known as classical genetics.

- Sickle cell disease is a recessive Mendelian inheritance , in which each parents contribute one mutanat allele to an affected offspring.

- The Indivy who are carrier for the sickle cell disease have some protective advantage against malaria. As a result ,the frequency of sickle cell carriers are high in malaria endemic areas.

In this discussion you will explore the role that genetics play in cancer. What role do these genes, and one gene in particular, normally play in cell division, and what happens when they gain mutations? This will help you better understand the molecular and cellular basis of cancer. You should spend approximately 3 hours on this assignment. Instructions For your initial post, you will choose a gene that is commonly mutated in cancer (Gene Assignments: RAD9, C-KIT, EGFR, P53, HER2,...
