1. Beam electrons undergo elastic and inelastic scattering during penetration through a specimen. Elastic scattering generates backscattered electrons that are used in topographic and compositional imaging of the sample. This elastic scattering changes for targets made of different elements and depends on the accelerating voltage that is used.
a. Does the image resolution increase or decrease with an increasing atomic number of the target? Explain.
b. Will you increase or decrease the accelerating voltage if you would like to improve the resolution of your image? Justify your decision.
c. What properties of the sample affect the mean free path( lambda)?
d. Does lambda depend on the parameters of the electron probe?
