Explain what differentiates one type of cell from another (morphology aside) at the molecular level? What role does DNA play in this differentiation process?

Solutions

Expert Solution

At molecular level the prokaryotes and eukaryotes differ from each other based on the sequences present.

The gene of an prokaryotes does not contain introns, where as the eukaryotes contain introns.

Alternative splicing does not occur in prokaryotes, It happens in eukaryotes

The prokaryotes contain less repetitive DNA sequence, where as the eukaryotes contains large number of repetitive DNA.

Post translational modification is not required in prokaryotes, eukaryotes have post translational modification and hence it has desired DNA sequence in the gene for it.

A bacterial cell that transits from a reservoir or from one host to another, is likely to encounter a range of non-optimal conditions in its new environment. For example, it may be exposed to damaging or toxic physical and chemical conditions. It will need to adapt if it is to survive. Outline what these physical and chemical properties are and give examples of how bacteria adapt to survive in these conditions.

In order to move from one place to another in the cell fatty acids need to associate with lipid chaperones. Why are these chaperones required, and what is the name of this group of proteins that are responsible for this trafficking of fatty acids within the cell? What is the main distinguishing feature of these proteins that makes it possible for fatty acids to move within the cell?
