Quantitative Behavior of RC Circuit

Task: You will be filling in the data table below with 10 rows of data that will track the time elapsed (the ‘Charging Time’), the voltage across the resistor, the voltage across the capacitor, the charge of the capacitor, and the current in the circuit.

Example table:

Elapsed time

(s)

Voltage across

resistor (V)

Voltage across

capacitor (V)

Charge on

capacitor (µC)

Current in

circuit (mA)

I only need clarification on these few questions:

  1. “Make a graph of your voltage on the resistor as a function of current (in A).”
Does this mean I have to change the current from mA to A, and put it in a graph with time (s) on the y axis and current on the x axis? Also, we were told to fit a trendline to the graph. What would the value of the slope of the trendline correspond to in the circuit?
  2. “Make a graph of your charge stored on your capacitor (in C) as a function of voltage across the capacitor. Fit a trendline to your data.”
And what would the value of the slope of this trendline correspond to?
    Thank you in advance!

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Make a graph of your voltage on the resistor as a function of current (in A) .

It means You have to convert mA to A (i.e by multiplying with 10-3 ) and draw a graph with  Voltage across resistor (V) on Y axis and Current on X- axis , like shown below

  • Also, we were told to fit a trendline to the graph. What would the value of the slope of the trendline correspond to in the circuit?

The Slope of the trend line will be the value of resistor you have used in the circuit.

Theory : The slope of V-I graph gives the resisance of the circuit.

By Ohms law, Resistance,

  • Make a graph of your charge stored on your capacitor (in C) as a function of voltage across the capacitor. Fit a trendline to your data.” And what would the value of the slope of this trendline correspond to?

The Slope of the trend line will be the value of capacitor (in C) you have used in the circuit.

Theory : we know that  charge stored on your capacitor, Q = CV

then, the slope of trend line =
