For every trial, the waves travel for exactly the same amount of time to the same point from each of the speakers. Does't that mean every "Wave state" should be a "trough?" Explain.

What is the essential difference between your data focused on the destructive interference and the data focused on the constructive interference?

Solutions

Expert Solution

If for every trial, the wave travel for exactly same amount of time from speakers.

No it does not mean that every "wave state" should be a trough.

As sound wave consists of crests and troughs , hence at a point t if one wave has state as crest then as the other wave travels in same time, hence at same time t this wave will have crest.

So it does not mean that wave state will be trough.

It can be crest part of trough part depending upon that distance, time and frequency

As far as data difference between constructive and destructive interference is concerned. The destructive interference is one having lesser amplitude of resulting wave and hence we will get dark fringe. In constructive interference amplitude of the waves increase hence we will have bright fringe.

Hence understanding amplitudes of resulting wave i.e. checking data of amplitude we find the difference of amplitude clearly visible in constructive and destructive interference

Two sinusoidal waves, identical except for phase, travel in the same direction along a string, producing the net wave: y(x,t) = (63.2 cm) * sin(1.4*x - 2.1 s-1*t + 0.24 rad); with x in meters and t in seconds. What is the phase difference between them? Give answer in radians. Do not enter unit. What is their amplitude? What is the wavelength of the two waves? What is their period?

A tuning fork generates sound waves with a frequency of 230 Hz. The waves travel in opposite directions along a hallway, are reflected by walls, and return. The hallway is46.0 m long and the tuning fork is located 14.0 m from one end. What is the phase difference between the reflected waves when they meet at the tuning fork?
