(THREE PARTS) Ethyl alcohol is formed by enzyme action on sugars and starches during fermentation. The UNBALANCED equation is as follows: C6H12O6 ----> CO2 + C2H6O

A) Write the balanced chemical equation.

B) If the density of ethyl alcohol is 0.789 g/mL, how many gallons of ethanol alcohol can be produced by fermentation of 100.0 lb of sugar? C) How many gallons of ethyl alcohol was produced from the fermentation of 100.0 lbs of sugar if your homemade still only operates at a yield rate of 89.6%?

Solutions

Expert Solution

A) Balanced equation

  C6H12O6  ---->  2C2H6O + 2CO2

B)

B) 1 lb = 453.592 grams

100 lbs = 100*453.592 = 453.592 * 102 grams

    1 gallon = 3.785 lit = 3.785 * 103 ml

   C6H12O6  ---->  2C2H6O + 2CO2

From equation, from 1mole of 1mole of sugar, we will get 2 moles of ethanol.

Here 453.592*102 grams is used. Converts grams into moles

Sugar M.Wt = 116

Sugar moles = wt/ mwt = (453.592*102)/116= 391 moles

, from 1mole of 1mole of sugar, we will get 2 moles of ethanol

Then 391moles of sugar will produce 2*391moles = 782 moles of ethanol

Moles = Wt(in grams)/M.Wt

Ethanol M.Wt = 46 gm/moles

Converts 782 moles into grams

Ethanol wt = 782 moles*46 gm/moles = 35972 gm

Next converts into ml

We know ethanol density = 0.789 g/ml

Density = wt(in gm)/ volume (in ml)

Volume = wt (in gm)/density = 35972 gm/0.789 =45591.88 ml

Next converts into gallon

    1 gallon = 3.785 lit = 3.785 * 103 ml

1ml = 0.2642*10-3

45591.88 ml = 45591.88 * 0.2642*10-3 gallon = 12045*10-3 gallon = 12.045 gallon

C) if it is 100% convertion we will get 12.045 gallon of ethanol

Then, for 89.6% yield how much we will get

= (89.6*12.045)/100 = 10.792 gallons
