Three blocks, each made of different materials, are going to be stacked on top of each other. One block is made of brass, another is made of iron, and a third is made of lead. Each block is a perfect cube: 1 m x 1 m x 1 m. Sam is worried about the weight of the blocks compressing each other. a. Come up with an algebraic equation for the total change in height for the stack of blocks (in other words – what’s the difference between its compressed height and 3 m?) in terms of the densities, Young’s moduli, and the dimensions of the blocks, as well as any needed physical constants. b. Which ordering of the blocks will produce the most compression? Using the densities found in this table and the Young’s moduli from this table, find the total change in height of this situation.
Densities: Iron=7.86e3, brass=8.49e3, lead=1.13e4
young's modulus: iron=21.0, brass=9.0, lead=1.6
