  • TONICITY: The ability of an extracellular solution to make water move into or out of a cell by osmosis is known as its "TONICITY".
  • ISOTONIC SOLUTION: 'ISO' means same.In this the extracellular fluid has the same osmolarity as the cell,and there will be no net movement of water into or out of the cell.
  • BLOOD PLASMA: It is a yellowish liquid part of the blood that carries cells and proteins throughout of the body.
  • CYTOSOL: It is also known Intracellular Fluid. It is the liquid found inside the cell that contains Cell organelles Except Cell Nucleus and it is part of Cytoplasm.
  • CYTOSINE: CYTOSINE is one of the 4 bases found in DNA and RNA and it is not involved in Tonicity functions with Blood Plasma as it is not a part of cytoplasm and Cytosine completely present in DNA which has not contact with other cell organelles,Cytosine function is to act like a cofactor to enzymes and tranfer a phosphate to convert Adenosine Diphosphate to Adenosine Triphosphate.
  • Importance of Blood plasma being isotonic to Cytosol of cell:
  1. The cytosol contains water,polar molecules and ions which help in cellular metabolism and to maintain tonicity of cell by exchanging water molecules in and out.
  2. The plasma is also 95% water that help in maintaing tonicity and carrying proteins to cells to perform their activities.
  3. As their function is to maintain isotonicty of cell by exhanging water molecules equally , they are important and dependent on each other.
  4. In isotonicity, the cells work normally as the isotonic solution allow the cells to move water and nutrients in and out of the cell.
  5. In hypertonicity, the cells become plasmolysed and do not work properly as they dont have enough water.
  6. In hypotonicity, the cells will lyse spilling their content into bloodstream leading to loss of many blood cells.
