Consider the following research question: Are there differences in individual reading comprehension scores as measured by standardized achievement tests between classes where students are provided silent sustained reading time and classes where reading is conducted through reading outloud. Silent sustained reading time is which type of variable
Group of answer choices
Dependent variable
Independent variable
Moderating variable
Extraneous variable
Silent sustained reading time is an independent variable as its effect is being seen here in this experiment on the reading comprehension score of students which is the dependent variable.
An independent variable is the variable whose value is independent of other variables in the experiment and is varied by the experimenter himself inorder to see how this variable affects the dependent variable. The dependent variable is the variable on which the effect of the independent variable is observed in the experiment. For example in an experiment where the effect of a fertilizer is being observed on the weight of a plant, the amount of fertilizer will be the independent variable while the weight of the plant will be the dependent variable. Extraneous variables are those other variables that are not been studied in the experiment but may have some influence on the experiments outcome while moderating variables are those variables that have an affect on the strength or the direction of the relationship between the independent and the dependent variable.
