1. What changes occur to the cardiovascular system as a result of endurance training in adults? (8 different adaptations and consequences).

2. What changes occur to the muscular system after strength training in adults? Be sure to include changes in muscle size, metabolic adaptations, neural adaptations, and effects on muscle fiber number. (minimum 4 changes).

3. Define the principles of specificity, training variables, overload, individualization, periodization, and reversibility in exercise prescriptions.

Expert Solution

1. As a result of exercise, the following changes happen in the cardiovascular system:

  • Heart size : the heart mass and volume increase due to exercise. The left ventricle volume increases the most to adapt to supplying more blood to the body.
  • Heart rate : the resting heart rate increases in an individual undergoing training.
  • Stroke volume : stroke volume is the volume of blood pumped out by the heart in one constriction. This volume increases with training.
  • Cardiac output : when a person does endurance training vigorously, the cardiac output increases. Cardiac output is the product of heart rate and stroke volume.
  • Blood pressure : during the activities, blood pressure increases, but the resting overall blood pressure decreases.
  • Blood volume : endurance training increases the blood volume.
  • Number of blood vessels : the number of capillaries increases.
  • Size of blood vessels : the capillaries have wider openings to accommodate more blood volume.
