Briefly state the primary problem that results from lack of randomization in an observational cohort study.

Solutions

Expert Solution

In observational cohort study the interventions takes place naturally, but in RCT or Randomized control trials, the interventions are controlled by the investigator.

The main problem which takes place in observational studies is due to the presence of Confounders variables (These are the variables which affect both dependent and independent variables) and due to the selection bias ( But it is prevented in RCT due to randomization and blinding). A confounder is a factor which is related to the intervention (e.g. treatment) as well as to the outcome and it can also affect both. For example in case of age- suppose in a study which is done to see the relationship between smoking (exposure) and lung cancer (outcome), age is considered as a factor, which can increase the incidence of the outcome. So if one of the groups (smokers or non-smokers) is of older population, the increase in the case of lung cancer may be influenced by age (which is a confounder), and not by the exposure that is smoking which is studied.

Write an analysis (essay) for question 2) The table summarizes the results from an observational study that followed a random sample of 8,474 people for about four years. All participants were free from heart disease at the beginning of the study. The variable Anger categorizes participants as Low Anger, Moderate Anger, High Anger based on the Speilberger Trait Anger Scale test, which measures how prone a person is to sudden feelings of anger. CHD stands for coronary heart disease, which...

#11-16. For each study described, state whether it will experimental or observational. If observational, identify which type specifically (retrospective cohort, prospective cohort, case-control, cross-sectional, ecological). Briefly explain how you can tell. In that questionnaire, we will ask if they suffer from kidney disease, and if they take regular medications including BZDs. We than assess how many people with kidney disease take BZDs and...

Using your own ideas, suggest a possible design for an ecologic study; how might the study design be affected by the ecologic fallacy?

Problem 8: The Framingham Heart Study was a longitudinal cohort study of 5000+ men and women. One outcome of interest was fasting glucose levels. Glucose levels were categorized into three different categories: Glucose Levels      -Diabetes (glucose >126),     -Impaired Fasting Glucose (glucose 100-125),     -Normal Glucose Several possible risk factors were also recorded: Risk Factors      -Sex      -Age      -BMI (normal weight, overweight, obese)      -Genetics To determine if each possible risk factor is related to glucose levels, researchers need to use an appropriate hypothesis test....

Problem #1: An observational study of Alzheimer's disease (AD) obtained data from 13 AD patients exhibiting moderate dementia and selected a group of 11 control individuals without AD. AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of the elderly and advancing age is known to be a primary risk factor in AD diagnosis. Therefore, it was crucial for the study's credibility to examine whether the ages in the AD group might be significantly different than in the control group. The ages of...
