differentiate between mucous and serous membranes
Mucus membrane | Serous membrane |
Lines the body cavities and tubes that open up to outside | Line the body cavities that does not open up to outside |
Secretes thick substances called mucus | secretes thin and watery fluid called serous fluid |
Contains single layer | contains double layer and fluid in-between |
Single mucus layer | contains parietal layer lines body and visceral membrane covers organ |
Mucus has function of trapping the dust and debris and also keeps the membrane soft and moist | serous fluid has function of prevents the friction when the organ moves |
Inflammation produces more mucus | serous membrane itself get infection |
Has the stratified squamous epithelium contains goblets cells in-between | epithelial sheet is a simple squamous cells layer |
Examples are membranes that lines respiratory tubes, GI tract | Examples are membranes that lines lungs(pluera), heart(pericardium), abdomen (peritoneam) |
