Please describe where the components of semen come from, the amount and the function of each component
Semen is a semi-viscous fluid conatining spermatozoa and other secretions from different parts of male reproductive system. It consists of-
Sperms- They are produced in testis and get matured in epididymis. They are contributed to semen along with hormones like testesterone.
Fructose- It comes from fluid given out by seminal vesicle. It constitutes 70% of semen volume. It is the main energy source and provides nourishment to spermatozoa.
Acid phosphates and proteolytic enzymes: These are produced by the prostate gland. Antibodies IgA, citric acid, phospholipids, potassium and zinc ions are also given out by prostate gland. They account for 20% of the volume of semen. Proteolytic enzymes cause liquifecation of the semen. Prostaglandins produced are responsible for suppressing immune response by female's body.
Mucoproteins- They are produced by bulbourethral glands and make up 5% of the volume. They provide semi-viscous nature to the semen.
