According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA) treatment guidelines , psychoeducational interventions that should be part of the standard therapy for the patients with schizophernia .The substances Abuse and the Mental health services administration has identified family psychoeducation as an evidenced - based practice that should be implemented in psychiatric settings And the Schizophernia patient Outcomes Reserach Team recommends education for the patient with schizophernia and their families as well as psychoeducation for weight loss in over weight individual s with schizophernia From over the last decades , providers have increasingly focused less on the long term disability associated with schizophernia and the more on the recovery . In the recovery oriented paradigm there are an emphasis on the patient involvement and the focus on the facilitating a collabrative relationship by providing psychoeducation .Psychoeducation cultivates a shared decision making approach that brings together the clinician's expertises and the patient's treatment preferences .Shared decision making fosters the autonomy and which result in the decision that better serve the individual 's choices , values and the interest Shared decision making provides and consumers of health care together as collaborators in determing the course of care . Research has shown us that the shared decicion making increase consumers ' s knowledge about and comfort wth teh health care decision they make .
PSychoeducation can be offered to patient family members or both can. Even research results from more than 30 randomized clinical trials have shown us that reduced relapse rates and enhanced recovery as well as improved family well being . Effective family psychoeducation includes empathic engagement , problem solving and communication skills and social networking and education on clinical resources and ongoing support .PAtient with the serious mental illness like schizophernia are vulnerable to alcohol and drug abuse amd may have co occuring substances use problems . Substances use will worsen and it makes the patient more prone to addictive behaviours . Substances use may also be a risk fcator for the medication nonadherence Therefore it is important to educate patients with the schizophernia about the adverse effects of substances use . Patient with schizophernia can benefit from learning about their illness .Guidelines recommend psychoeducational intervention as part of standard treatment for patient with schizophernia .
