Expert Solution

Single use medical devices are those which can be used only once on a patient these are called disposable devices. But now the trend of reprocessing of Single use device is increasing in the health sector.

  • It leads to cost saving by reprocessing instead of using and discarding.
  • It leads to production of less medical waste and less adverse effect on environment. Medical waste take considerable amount of cost for disposal and landfill area.
  • It is believed now that Single use devices can be used on the patients again if proper reprocessing done. And now in the world this is becoming more acceptable. Especially in the developing countries with limited resources, where cost of health care is unaffordable for the patients. Reusing of the single use device by reprocessing can be used on different patients to make the health care treatment feasible for everyone to afford.

Single use device reprocessing includes:

  • Disinfecting
  • Cleaning
  • Sterilizing
  • Packaging
  • Storing to use it again

Reprocessing can be done by the hospital organization or by the third party organization, if hospitals do not have proper system for reprocessing third party organization is the best option.

Reprocessor are responsible for the adverse event. Reprocessor should no the type of material and manufacturing.

Before they can be marketed, all new medical devices must be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A new device has a protective cover which needs to be removed easily. A similar device, already on the market, has a cover that requires an average force of 8 pounds to remove. The laboratory test data on a random sample of 9 of the new device indicates the following removal forces:     6.3, 8.4, 7.8, 6.4, 5.4, 8.0, 7.0, 6.2,...
