What elements must be present in order for a choice to be autonomous? Why does it matter whether a choice is autonomous?
What does the principle of beneficence demand of us?
1 Autonomy in other words can be referred as self-governance.it could be either a positive or negative obligation.For a patients choice to be autonomous choice,the patient must make his or her choice voluntarily,his or her choice must be adequately informed and the patient must have decision-making capacity .
2 It is crucial to decide whether a patient is competentent is a difficult decision.The choice is unavoidable because the default position is that the patients choice will be implemented absent .The choice is important because in making it,we are actually walking a fine line between the Scylla of erroneously ajudging an autonomous choice to be non autonomous,thereby wrongfully failing to acknowledge the patients autonomy and the Charybdis of erroneously adjudging a non autonomous choice to be autonomous,thereby wrongfully failing to protect from harm a patient unable to protect himself.
